Builder's For Change

Shannel's Story

Educating Young women in developing nations is a catalyst for change. Melissa, through her life’s work, identified that post secondary education is vital.

Without post secondary goals many children have no way out of poverty and potentially destructive lifestyles. When young women are educated, they become mentors for their families and friends and experience first-hand the opportunities available through education. The hope is that they empower and educate their own children to help break the circle of poverty.

Melissa saw first hand, while at Dove Missions in Puerto Plata, that working with young children motivated them to find a way out of poverty. It was here that an eight year old Ana met Melissa. Melissa saw great potential in Ana and mentored her for many years. Our education initiatives started with Ana who now has a post secondary certificate, a full time job, and aspirations to continue her education.

We are now pleased to announce that we have committed to help another extraordinary young woman from the Dominican Republic. Shannel was a star pupil at school and a shining example of the dedication and mentorship of Dove Missions. Shannel is a very bright young woman who enjoys languages and has a keen interest in business.

Shannel speaks Spanish, English, French and German. She is a truly motivated and inspiring young woman. Builders For Change is sponsoring Shannel in her pursuit of a Business Economics Degree at a University in the Dominican Republic. Shannel’s family is a long bus ride away so we have committed to pay her education and living expenses.

Shannel communicates regularly with our Board and we believe she will excel at anything she takes on! August 2024 saw Shannel setting up her first apartment and starting her first semester of University.

Builders For Change believes in Shannel and we hope that you will as well. We are currently fundraising to finance this four to five year journey with Shannel. We hope you can help in some way, please donate today.
